Somerton Group of Artists

The group have decided to have a target of two days per month working to a memorable pattern per month of the first Monday and the third Wednesday starting on Wed May 16th.  The success of the programme will be reviewed after three sessions and, if popular, will be extended through to Wed 15th August.

The nominal time will be 2pm - 4pm but feel totally free to come and go as you please.

In some generally available venues there may be an opportunity for having lunch before or (even “and”!) tea afterwards but members must make their own arrangements unless noted otherwise.

Toilets should always be available.

It would obviously ease car parking problems if people could share.

The programme initially is:

Wed 16 May  Muchelney School Shop (a.k.a Muchelney Farm Shop) is on the right on the Kingsbury Episcopi road out of Muchelney.  There is limited parking inside the farm shop entrance for the disabled otherwise parking is available in Silver Street or The Row.  These are shown on Brigid’s delightful map (below).

 The website is

Muchelney TA10 0DN

There is a farm walk, a newish orchard of standard trees, a garden and a haven tunnel providing shelter in bad weather, also a bee and butterfly garden.  There are also various old farm implements and the farmhouse itself, viewed from Silver Street, is an excellent subject.  Most importantly the shop is well known for cream teas (n.b. no need to book but if you let me know you’re probably coming and might enjoy tea then I can let Helen, the boss, know general numbers.  RH)

Mon 4th Jun   This is painting in Gordon and Thea’s beautiful garden.  If you don’t know it then do come along.  In addition to the garden, there is a tangly wood surrounding it.  Some studio space and a gazebo is available if the weather is bad. Do note that G&T would welcome people starting in the morning after 10.30 so we can have a communal, albeit bring-your-own, lunch.

The address is:

℅ Gordon and Thea Miles

The Barn,

TA10 9JQ

To get there take the Long Sutton road from Somerton and then the first left after crossing the railway line.  This goes straight over the hill and after a mile or so The Barn is the last but one house on the left before the A372 cross-roads.  You will have to park on the road.

Wed 20 Jun National Trust Barrington Court

Ilminster TA19 0NQ

There are the full facilities expected of a big National Trust property plus beautiful gardens and buildings, farmland, stables and ponds.  Obviously you will have to pay for entry if you are not a member or a volunteer.

Mon 2 Jul Zig Zag Building, Glastonbury - open link on downloads page for details.

Mon 6 Aug Somerton Court Country House - details to follow.

One for the fit and independent - Town tree farm

One possible site we looked at was Towntree Farm, Town Tree Lane, Stapleton, Martock, TA12 6AP - off to the right halfway between Long Load and the Stapleton cross-roads.  This is a beautiful and peaceful private nature reserve.  Its quite a walk from the signed car-park along the yellow-arrowed route which is well cleared but soft in parts. There are lots of ponds / lakes spread through lovely woodland and imaginative sculptures and bridges. We felt it might be a bit demanding for some as you need to take seats and your gear as well as the walk.  There is an honesty box for the £4 charge. Try it yourselves.

Ideas for the rest of the programme, if we continue, would be much appreciated.
